The term “alternative medicine” is loosely used to include any health practitioner who is not using the conventional or orthodox approach of drug prescriptions and considers their methods to be “natural.” Yet can anyone practicing alternative medicine be considered a practitioner of medicine? 4. Many people seek out forms of alternative medicine because of its emphasis on preventing injury, illness and disease rather than curing it. Alternative medicine providers will still treat acute illness when it occurs, but they are often more focused on making the lifestyle choices to prevent such things from happening.
Alternative medicine contends that the body is naturally able to heal itself and remain stable – known in medicine as homeostasis. Twenty years ago insurance would not pay for them as they were considered “alternative and ineffective.” Today thousands of people have been helped by chiropractors and they are now recognized in the medical community.
